The 300-Pound Wake-Up Call: My Kitchen on the Passenger Seat - THE MILE MAKER DRIVER SHOP

The 300-Pound Wake-Up Call: My Kitchen on the Passenger Seat

"I can't pass you."

Those are the four scariest words a truck driver can hear. I was sitting on the crinkly paper of the exam table, weighing in at 320 pounds. My blood pressure was 160/100. The doctor told me I was a walking heart attack. He gave me a 3-month temporary card and a warning: fix it, or you're done.

I walked out of there terrified. I realized my "diet" for the last ten years had been roller dogs, buffet fried chicken, and infinite coffee refills. The interstate system is a "food desert", and I was starving in it.

I did the math. I was spending $600 a month on food that was killing me. So, I reinvested that money into my truck. I bought a 12-Volt Lunchbox Stove and a Portable 12V Frying Pan.

The first week was hard. But then I got a rhythm. I’d throw a chicken breast and some peppers in the lunchbox stove at 10 AM. By the time I took my 30-minute break, the cab smelled like a home-cooked meal. I started making oatmeal in the morning instead of buying greasy breakfast sandwiches.

Three months later, I went back to the doctor. I was down 25 pounds. My BP was 128/82. I got my 2-year medical card back. That stove didn't just save me money; it saved my license.
